Pastor Jerome Tyler “JT” Thomas is charismatic behind the pulpit, charming to all he comes in contact with, and lethal to those who linger too long. Since the age of twenty-two, when he prayed for God to keep him out of prison, JT knew he would preach the gospel. Bishop Turner makes it possible; but there are strings attached, and now JT isn’t sure he can stay tied down.

Cutting loose causes more problems than JT anticipated. When an old friend from his days on the streets resurfaces and his extra curricular activity comes knocking on his front door, JT’s life and the lives of those close to him spiral out of control. Now he will need divine intervention to make things right. But how much help can a man hope to receive when he feels he’s been forsaken by God?

MY REVIEW

To be honest, this is my first time reading Ms. Miller. All the same, I found Forsaken to be a nice book. There were some good twists and turns that caused me to want to see how it all turned out.  JT, for all his mistakes, turns into a man bent on making good not only for the people that treated him right but even for those that had tried to take him out. That’s a wonderful message, the transformative power of forgiveness and repentance. That’s a message for all audiences.

The novel has a pretty good dose of drama. There’s drama at every corner, especially in the beginning. There is family drama. Drama of the soul. Even baby mama drama. At some points I found the drama to be a little contrived and cliched, to the detriment of the story’s pacing. But overall I was impressed by book’s theme: The name of the Lord is indeed a strong tower. The righteous run in and are saved. How could you go wrong with that one?

Nice job, Vanessa.
